About the Real BMW X5 E53

The BMW X5 E53 is the first-generation BMW X5, a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced from September 1999 until September 2006. It was BMW's first SUV and the first vehicle the company ever marketed under its "Sports Activity Vehicle" branding — a category that became the template for the entire X-series. Although BMW is headquartered in Munich and the model was engineered in Germany, every E53 was assembled at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in the United States, which BMW had opened in 1994 specifically to support its move into the SUV segment. The X5 launched with a choice of M62 4.4-litre V8 and M54 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engines, with diesel variants joining the lineup soon after; a Le Mans-derived V8 powered the limited 4.6is and 4.8is performance flagships. A facelift ("LCI") arrived in late 2003 with revised headlights, taillights, bumpers and dashboard. The E53 was replaced by the second-generation E70 X5 for the 2007 model year.
