About the Real DKW-Vemag

Vemag (Veículos e Máquinas Agrícolas S.A.) was a São Paulo-based industrial company that secured a licence from the German Auto Union to assemble DKW cars in Brazil and began production at its Ipiranga plant in 1956. The Brazilian-built lineup was built to the same blueprints as the contemporary DKW F94 / Auto Union 1000 from Germany — a three-cylinder two-stroke engine driving the front wheels, an aerodynamic two-box body and the recognisable hourglass grille — and was marketed under several names: the Belcar sedan (1956-1967), the Vemaguete station wagon (1958-1967), the Candango off-road utility (1958-1963) and the Fissore-bodied luxury Fissore (1964-1967). Vemag was absorbed by Volkswagen do Brasil in 1967 and Brazilian DKW production ended that same year, with the Vemag tooling re-used by Volkswagen for further models. The Belcar and the Vemaguete remain icons of the early Brazilian automotive industry and are sought after as classic collectors' cars.
